During initial and follow-up consultations, the problems described are first narrowed down and specified. The urgency of the problems and the severity of the symptoms are assessed (ICD-10 diagnosis). Afterwards, a decision is made together with the students as to which measures are best suited to solving their problems.
If the problem can be narrowed down or the symptoms are mild, further counseling sessions are offered at the Mental Health Services and an accurate analysis of the problem and goals is carried out first. If the symptoms are more severe, the patient is referred for further treatment.
Depending on the diverse range of problems, a wide variety of interventions can be used in individual counseling. These include, for example, addressing study problems through the use of appropriate learning strategies, time management techniques, anxiety management strategies, methods for effective exam preparation, and strategies for dealing with symptoms of depression. Psychotherapeutic counseling can be supplemented with informational material and self-help literature.
The number of counseling sessions varies depending on the problem. Up to ten sessions are possible. A session usually lasts 45 minutes.
